Hotel "Gounos" is located just 5 km from Leivethra, the ancient city of Macedonia. It was located on the southeastern slopes of Mount Olympus, near Dion. There have been discovered remains of ancient facilities. Nearby there is also the stream Sys (Ziliana) of the ancient times, creating a landscape of great natural beauty.
Leivethra was a sacred hamlet of the Muses and therefore, they are also called Leivithrides or Leivithriades. In the town were the bones of the mythical Orpheus. The oracle said that if the sun could see the bones of Orpheus, the city would be destroyed by Syn (Sys=sow boar). Finally, the destruction was not a monster, but a natural disaster. Then the tomb and bones of Orpheus, were moved elsewhere in the foothills of Olympus.
Generally speaking, regarding the placement of the archaeological site of Leivithra, while the City "Leivithra" extends to the current "Alonia" of Skotina and the Acropolis "Leivithra" to the section of the old Leptokarya. Of particular interest is the cemetery of Leivithra. Pieces of rubble, indoor flooring, outdoor stone, coins and figurines are the key findings of the excavations, which are the first stage.
